Did your elders ever keep secrets from you?
Tonight I spent over an hour speaking with my mom and celebrating her.
We didn’t always have this openly verbal relationship.
There were years of my adolescence where we rarely spoke genuinely.
Much of that was due to the secrets we were all keeping from each other.
The secrets we keep from our loved ones, we often want to hide from ourselves.
Secrets under the false validation of protecting the young.
Truths that we are not willing to confront.
The real hard truth I have learned with my Amma–
Exposing intergenerational secrets unburdens us all.
